DRAMA
NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN UNDER 15 YEARS
“At 04:48 when the desperation haunts me, I will hang myself to the sound of my lover’s breathing,” wrote Sarah Kane (1971-1999). She took her own life at the age of only 28 before she had the chance to see 4:48 Psychosis performed. The play is a concentrated vision of a self-destructive society written by a playwright who is the ultimate voice of the existential apathy and numbness of the 90s generation.
Kane’s disquieting and deeply personal narrative breaks all the dramaturgical rules. It is one long text without defined roles, without description of the cast and without scenes. More actors than one could have been placed on the stage but director Jacob F. Schokking saw the play as a monologue. Only one actress appears on a minimalist stage: Trine Dyrholm as the tortured young woman, while the supporting cast, Dr. This, Dr. That and Dr. Fikkumdik, only appear on video, projected onto a gigantic canvas on the stage - where she also pops up in video form.
An important element in this production is Gert Sørensen’s computerised sound design, which envelops the whole show. Right from the start, Jacob F. Schokking, Gert Sørensen and Trine Dyrholm developed the image and audio side step by step and simultaneously with the stage action in order to generate a single integral idiom.
Please note that 4:48 Psykose is performed in Danish without subtitles.
4:48 Psykose is an updated version of the Betty Nansen Theatre's 2002 - version.
